The Basics of Photography

A few things written by yours truly

Favorite photography sites:

Steves Digicams

Great site, with a fun monthly photo contest (sweet prizes). It’s best feature is its VERY helpful, well staffed, and friendly forum.

Sony Flickr Forum
Although not the official forum, this is one of the most active Sony forums out there.

Photoclubalpha
Home of David Kilpatrick, the guru of Sony Alpha. Loads of good articles. Also the best place for Sony news.

DPReview
Very thorough reviews; this is where I go for them. The forums are informative, but not too friendly.

Dyxum
Resource for all things Sony, including lens database.

Alpha Tracks
Good Sony blog.

Best (FREE) photo software:

Google Picasa:
Great for basic stuff (contrast, cropping); the best for orginizinng. The controls are very intuitive and fun.

Irfanview:
Intermediate; good for fine tuning rotations, colors, and crops. Controls arent too hard, and there’s a lot it can do.

Paint.net:
Advanced, with easy controls, with lots of features, but it doesn’t have some that are dear to me, like an airbrush and feathering the edge of a crop. But otherwise much easier than GIMP.

GIMP:
Very advanced; a free equivalent of Photoshop. Hard to master the controls, but it can do pretty much anything. I use this for only the most complicated stuff though, since it isn’t half as fast or easy as Picasa.

Microsoft ICE:
Great for stitching panoramas.

Resize:
Perfect for bulk resizing (like for emails)
